The Royal
Oak Brewery, for the second year hosted the Polar Beer
Festival 2002. This year there were some changes, but all-in-all
the gig was a success.
According to the information that The Royal Oak Brewery handed out, there were
14 micro-breweries, with over 30 beers to choose from. The Polar Beer Festival
had 2 sessions, each ran for 2 1/2 hours. During a session you
received a complementary glass, free food buffet, and all the beer you can
drink. Roughly 150 people were let in for each session, and
besides getting a complementary glass each vendor had some sort of
free coaster, key chain, sticker, or pamphlet to handout.
Like last year, there was a single recipe tasting contest. All participants
were asked to brew one barrel of the same beer. The amount and
style of malt and hops was identical for each brewery. The
only difference was the local water and yeast used at each
brewery. The goal was to brew a Sweet Stout with a target of
1.048 original gravity (12° Plato) and a target bitterness of 25 IBU's.
